week 3

assignment 1
New literacies refer to new forms of literacy made possible by digital technology developments. In order to be successful in this day and age one has to be familiar with the new technology. The term being literate has broadened to include communication through technology.
Teachers must prepare their students with the these new forms of literacy because they will be the builders of this new world. The global economy is dependent on them. This proves to be quite challenging because the new literacies keep changing due to the fast paced technological advancements this causes teachers to feel unprepared and inadequate to teaching these skills. Teachers must constantly update their knowledge and skills to keep up with the technological advancements. There are many benefits to these new litteracies. Technology integration assists teachers to making their classes more engaging and stimulating, Teachers can also use technology to help them differentiate instruction making their lessons centered around all kinds of learners. Teachers must be careful to use the technology as a means to learning so they can develop proper cognitive skills.

assignment 2
  • Which ideas from the PPT reflect what the ELA teachers you interviewed are currently doing to integrate technology with their literacy instruction?
  • The classroom I am doing my field work in is comprised of very young students so there is not much technology integration. The teacher shows her students short video clips and recordings to make her lessons more engaging and give her students a visual aid.
  • How can you help change their instructional practices to include the use of technology and the Internet in their literacy and content-area curriculum?
  • I would show the teacher more websites applicable for children at this age.
  • What professional development and/or resources will they need in order to make these changes?
  • They will need more computers available. The teacher will also have to learn about the new litteracies to keep herself updated so that she can provide her students with a proper background knowledge of these skills.
  • What ideas do you have for grouping students so they will have equal access to technology in the classroom? Group work is always effective. The teacher can also make different centers in the classroom where not every student will be using the same software.
